Air conditioning noise: unit location matters as much as the specification

Choosing quiet air conditioning means comparing equivalent figures and checking where the equipment will sit. A brochure's lowest number cannot tell you exactly what you will hear in bed, in the lounge or next door.

Compare like with like

The European energy label gives indoor and outdoor sound power. Specifications may also list sound pressure, often at several fan speeds. These are different quantities: do not rank systems by comparing the lowest figure for one measurement with the highest figure for another.

Ask for the complete system reference, operating mode and conditions behind each figure. Where a quiet-mode number is highlighted, ask about normal operation too. This is a useful purchasing check, rather than an invitation to calculate a room's sound level from a brochure.

Start with people and furniture

For a bedroom, mark the bed position and explain when you expect to use the system. In a study, the desk used for calls matters; in a lounge, the seating positions matter. A simple sketch showing doors, windows, curtains and planned furniture helps the discussion.

The chosen position also needs to provide suitable air distribution and maintenance access. Hiding a unit in the most distant corner may compromise comfort or servicing. Ask the installer to consider these needs together before holes are drilled or decorating is completed.

Give the outdoor unit its own assessment

Show the installer possible outdoor positions, nearby bedrooms and communal areas. The support, vibration transmission, manufacturer clearances and service access need checking during the site assessment. Do not enclose the equipment in a decorative box without an approved design.

In a shared building, establish which permissions and siting conditions need checking. A phone app or one catalogue figure does not prove that a location meets the relevant acoustic requirements. That assessment depends on the surroundings and the rules applicable to the installation.

Record the decision and check the handover

The proposal should identify the intended locations and supports, including any additional measures agreed. If there are alternatives, explain your priorities: sleeping comfortably, appearance, service access or separation from a neighbour's window.

At handover, listen from the places you normally occupy and ask for a demonstration of the available fan settings and modes. If a new vibration develops later, note when it happens and report it. Do not adjust mounting bolts or remove panels yourself.
